An update on our Kauai vacation plans for February 2015….we’ve booked ourselves a little cottage! This charming home is described as “Hale Ko” and is part of the Sugarmill cottages in the Poipu Kai beach resort.
Initially I was going to reserve a condo at the Waipouli Beach Resort, probably one of the best-equipped condos on Kauai complete with a lazy river pool and on-site restaurant. But after thinking about it for a while, I realized it was very similar to the Honua Kai resort that we stayed at on our last trip to Maui in November, 2013. Both resorts are large and sprawling with many units across multiple buildings.
There’s nothing wrong with these fine condos, as they have plenty of space, luxurious finishes, and large swimming complexes, but I thought that we should try something different, something a little more low-key, a little more Hawaii. The idea of renting a standalone house was very appealing because after living in a house for the past 9 months, we’ve become accustomed to having plenty of privacy, space, and a yard. Plus it would fulfill our dream, albeit temporarily, of owning a home in Hawaii…!! We rented “Hale Ko” in a very easy transaction from Poipu365. I’ll let you all know how it goes come next year! We’re super excited!
One of the most important things for me was the availability of air conditioning in the home. You’d be surprised how many homes and buildings on Kauai actually do NOT have air conditioning! It really narrowed down our search to a few places. Many would argue that you don’t really need air conditioning on Hawaii because of the abundance of trade winds, and I’ve found that to be true in some cases, but I ALWAYS want the option of air conditioning no matter where I go…I’ve spent many sleepless nights in Singapore as a child in rooms without air conditioning so it’s a MUST for me!
I like how we will have our own garage, full kitchen, washer dryer, etc. All the conveniences of home! Plus, since the resort is part of the larger Poipu Kai Resort, we’d have access to their facilities such as a pool, and tennis courts (not that we play). Best of all, it’s only a short walk to Poipu Beach – probably the most swim-able beach we experienced during the winter months in Kauai.
It would have been nice to get an ocean view, but many of those condos (with air conditioning) we were looking at were fully booked for our time frame (sun seekers who flock to Hawaii in the winter usually reserve the same condos year after year and so my suggestion would be to plan your trip EARLY in order to get the best lodging options).
I’m also researching all the yummy food that we will eat, including where to have my birthday dinner! On our last trip, my favorite (nice) meal was at Merriman’s. Maybe we will do it again on this trip!
Also we’re looking forward to returning to the Kauai Coffee Company for their great samples and beautiful grounds.
Have a great weekend! This weekend we’re headed to the Berkshires where we went to last year for the exact same John Williams concert. Despite the forecast for rain, I’m hoping the weekend won’t be a total washout! Aloha….
